Why organization matters became clear to me long before I launched Smart Move Organizing. I spent 12 years as a teacher and school counselor, working closely with a diverse range of students along with their families. I noticed some kids struggled—not because they weren’t smart or capable—but because they were overwhelmed by disorganization. Their backpacks were often bursting with old papers, crumpled assignments, broken pencils, and snack wrappers. And the impact was bigger than just a messy bag.
Many students I worked with had ADHD or executive functioning challenges, and disorganization often led to late assignments, poor grades, and low self-esteem. But when they were taught simple, practical systems—like a folder for each class or a labeled homework section—it made a big difference. Organization matters because systems create structure, and structure builds confidence.
The same is true for adults. We may not be turning in assignments anymore, but disorganization still has real-life consequences. Unpaid bills get lost in the shuffle, deadlines slip through the cracks, and before you know it, you’re hit with late fees or missed opportunities.
Clutter doesn’t just take up space—it costs you time, money, and peace of mind. It’s a clear example of why organization matters, no matter your age or stage of life.

At my own house, our kitchen island has a way of becoming the catch-all of the day. School papers, toys, snacks, and mail all seem to land there. I try to stay on top of it by opening the mail daily and either handling it immediately or placing it in my pending file to address soon. I make a habit of resetting the island each night so it’s ready for the next day—but it’s a constant reminder of how quickly clutter creeps in if you don’t stay intentional.

Lately, as I’ve started training with ShelfGenie, I’ve been thinking even more about how our spaces function. I recently tackled my own closet and it felt so good to clear things out. But here’s the key: it’s not enough to just bag things up—you have to get them out of the house. Whether it’s dropping off at a donation center, giving items to a friend, or taking items to the Clothes Bin, doing it quickly matters. It’s so easy for those bags to linger in a corner, still taking up space and mental energy. A true declutter includes the follow-through. That follow-through is part of why organization matters—it gives closure, clarity, and control.
Organization isn’t just about how things look—it’s about how your home supports your life. It saves time, creates calm, and helps you find what you need so you can actually get started. And when it’s a task you’re already dreading, every extra delay only adds to the stress. A well-organized space makes everything feel more doable.
That’s why I’m passionate about what I do. Whether you’re juggling work, family, or just everyday life, getting organized is one of the best things you can do for your time, your productivity, and your peace of mind.
If your home feels like it’s constantly working against you, let’s change that.
