If you’re planning a move this summer, you’re probably already feeling the pressure. Between work, kids, schedules, and everything else on your plate, packing can quickly become overwhelming. One of the biggest mistakes I see is people jumping straight into packing without decluttering first. It seems faster in the moment, but it usually leads to more stress, heavier boxes, and a new home filled with things you didn’t really want to bring with you.
The truth is simple. The less you pack, the easier your move will be. If you’re getting ready to move in Omaha or the surrounding area, here are seven areas to focus on before you pack a single box.
Closets tend to hold onto a lot of “just in case” pieces. If you did not wear it last season, there is a good chance you will not reach for it next year either.
Moving is the perfect time to be honest about what actually fits your life right now. Let go of what no longer serves you so your new closet feels lighter and easier to manage.
Packing food is rarely worth the effort, especially when it is already opened or close to expiring. Take a quick pass through your pantry and toss anything expired. Donate unopened items you know you will not use. This will save you from packing unnecessary weight and dealing with spills later.
Bathrooms are full of half-used products, old makeup, and items you forgot you even had. Most of these are inexpensive and easy to replace. Instead of packing clutter, keep only what you actually use on a regular basis. Your future self will thank you when it is time to unpack.
Loose papers, old mail, instruction manuals, and random drawers tend to build up over time. You do not need to move all of it.
Keep it simple. Sort into three categories: keep, shred, recycle. This is one of the fastest ways to reduce clutter and feel more in control of your move.
Kids move through phases quickly, and their belongings often pile up just as fast. Before packing, go through toys, clothes, and gear they have outgrown. Focus on what they actually play with and use right now.
This is not about taking things away. It is about creating space for what fits their current stage and making your new home easier to maintain.
Kitchens are one of the most time-consuming areas to pack and unpack.
Take a look at how many duplicates you have. Extra spatulas, mismatched containers, multiple sets of the same item. Keeping only what you need will make unpacking your kitchen in your new home much smoother.
This is often the hardest category. We hold onto things because we think we might need them someday. But if you have not used something in years, it is likely not essential.
Moving gives you a natural reset. Let go of the items that are taking up space so you can start fresh in your new home.

Decluttering before your move is one of the most impactful things you can do. It saves time, reduces moving costs, and makes unpacking feel manageable instead of overwhelming.
If you are feeling stuck or short on time, you do not have to do it alone.
