As summer winds down in the Omaha area, back-to-school season seems to arrive overnight. Between school supply lists, sports practices, activities, and squeezing in one last family adventure, it’s easy to feel like you’re already behind before the first day of school.
The good news? You don’t have to have everything perfectly organized before school starts. A few simple steps can save you time, reduce clutter, and make those busy school mornings much smoother.
As a professional organizer in Omaha and a mom myself, here are my five favorite back-to-school organization tips.
Before heading to Target, Walmart, Costco, or your favorite office supply store, take a few minutes to see what you already have.
Every year, my kids come home with school supplies that were barely used. Crayons, colored pencils, folders, notebooks, headphones, scissors, glue sticks, and rulers often still have plenty of life left.
This is one reason I prefer shopping from the school supply list myself instead of purchasing the pre-packaged school supply kits. I can use what we already own and only buy what we’re actually missing.
Not only does this save money, but it also prevents unnecessary clutter. I don’t need (or want to be frank) five pairs of headphones by the time my child reaches fifth grade. Buying only what you need keeps your home simpler and prevents supplies from piling up year after year.
Quick Tip: Gather all of your leftover school supplies in one bin before shopping. You may be surprised by how much you already have.
Before filling your cart with new clothes, spend a little time going through each child’s closet and dresser.
Have them try on what they already own or at least check that everything still fits. Make a list of what they actually need instead of guessing.
I also don’t automatically buy new shoes every school year. My kids are hard on shoes, especially my son who runs track. Instead, I replace shoes when they need replacing, which is usually two or three times throughout the year.
The same goes for clothing. Great sales happen throughout the year, so don’t feel pressured to replace everything in August just because school is starting.
While you’re going through closets, pull out anything that’s too small. Create separate piles to donate, sell, pass down, or store for younger siblings. Starting the school year with closets that actually fit your kids makes getting dressed each morning much easier.
A little pantry organization goes a long way during the school year.
Take 20 to 30 minutes to:
When mornings get hectic, having an organized pantry makes packing lunches faster and helps kids find snacks independently.
If your children pack their own lunches or grab after-school snacks, consider creating a kid-friendly snack zone with healthy options they can easily reach.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Even a quick refresh before school starts can make daily routines much easier.

School papers have a way of multiplying overnight.
Before they start coming home, decide where everything will go.
Create a spot for:
Personally, I use a memory box for each of my kids. Some families prefer binders, filing boxes, or Artkive. Whatever system you choose, be selective about what you keep. Not every worksheet needs to be saved.
And one piece of advice I’ve learned from experience… if you’re going to recycle something, it’s often easier to do it before your kids notice it sitting in the pile.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that everything needs to be perfectly organized before the first day of school.
It doesn’t.
Organization doesn’t have to happen all at once. Tackle one area at a time. Maybe you organize the pantry this weekend, clean out closets next week, and set up a paper system after school has already started.
Progress is much more realistic than perfection. The goal isn’t a Pinterest-perfect home. It’s creating systems that save you time, reduce stress, and make everyday life easier.
Whether you’re getting ready for back-to-school or simply want your home to function better, organization doesn’t have to happen all at once.
